How much can an assisted living home ask for a down payment? - assisted living for senior citizens

We live in Mississippi and my mother wants to move into an assisted living. It will not be able to stay for 2 months at $ 2900.00 and they ask for a deposit - of 2 months rent in a semi-private room. This seems to me extremely. Has anyone had this experience here and it is a common practice? I would appreciate any input.
